Early Life

His birthday is January 8, 1967, and he was born at Chicago Lying-In Hospital in the Hyde Park neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side. He is one of three half-siblings; a brother and a sister, as well as a younger brother. Originally from Arkansas, Kelly’s mother, Joanne, was a schoolteacher and a devout Baptist. His father, who was absent from Kelly’s life, lived in the Ida B. Wells community. In 1955, Kelly’s mother married his stepfather, Lucious, who worked for an airline. At the age of five, Kelly’s mother moved into the Wells Homes public housing project in Chicago’s Bronzeville neighborhood. Kelly began singing in the church choir at the age of eight.

Kelly referred to his eight-year-old girlfriend, Lulu, in his autobiography. They were on a play date when, after a fight with older children, she was pushed into a creek and swept downstream by a rapid current, and drowned. Kelly called Lulu his first musical inspiration.

Kelly was sexually abused by an older female family member from the ages of eight to fourteen. When his mother and grandparents were not home, members of his family behaved differently. Theresa, Kelly’s older sister, was trusted with babysitting her younger siblings, including Carey, Kelly’s younger brother. Even though their older brother was spared and allowed to play outside, both Carey and Kelly were punished by Theresa separately when inside, and she refused to acknowledge the abuse years later. In his 2012 autobiography Soulacoaster, Kelly wrote that he never told anyone about the abuse because he was “too afraid and ashamed”.Around age 10, Kelly was also sexually abused by an older male friend of the family. Kelly stated in his autobiography that he had been shot in the shoulder, at age 11, by boys who were stealing his bike, although a friend of his later stated that Kelly had shot himself during a suicide attempt. Kelly entered Kenwood Academy in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood in September 1980, where he met music teacher Lena McLin, who encouraged him to perform Stevie Wonder’s classic ‘Ribbon in the Sky’ as part of his high school talent show. Despite his shyness, Kelly put on sunglasses and entered the talent show. McDonald encouraged him to leave the high school basketball team in favor of music. McLin said he had been furious at first, but after his performance in the talent show, he changed his mind.

Aside from owing the IRS $20 million at one time, he admitted to having been forced to borrow several million dollars from his label to pay bills. He faces financial problems because he can’t tour in many countries outside the U.S. because of his controversies, and his U.S. tours are often interrupted by protests.

The streaming services Spotify and others no longer provide his songs in their public playlists. Although his songs can still be streamed directly from Spotify, they will no longer be recommended in public playlists like Discover Weekly or on any other Spotify-curated playlists or radio channels.

The label is in a tough position because Kelly hasn’t been convicted of any crime. Firing him and withholding money would seem legally tricky. RCA/Sony might be able to get out of the deal using a “morals clause” in his contract.

However, Kelly had no money and it took him several days to come up with the funds. Valencia Love, R.
