As a result of the WHO’s declaration of a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), the outbreak has been elevated to a global health emergency. A total of 20,846 cases had been confirmed as of 28 July. Monkeypox symptoms usually exposure in 2 to 3 weeks

As of 21 July, 98% of cases outside African endemic regions were reported among men having sex with men, in particular those with multiple partners, 75% occurred among ethnically white people, and 41% among HIV-positive people. In communicating about monkeypox’s demographic aspects, particularly with gay and bisexual men, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention emphasizes the need to reduce stigma.

Monkeypox Symptoms

In cases of monkeypox, patients usually experience fever and other non-specific symptoms for a week or two after exposure, followed by a rash and lesions that usually heal, crust, and fall off within 2-4 weeks of exposure. It is more difficult to distinguish monkeypox from other infections when some patients only get a single lesion in their mouths or genitals, as opposed to the large number of lesions caused by monkeypox in the past. People with known infections have died (without treatment) in 1–3 percent of cases before the current outbreak. Serious cases are more likely to occur in children and immunocompromised individuals.
