A child’s Early life, Family, and Education
Born in Novo Mesto, Yugoslavia, in 1970, Melanie Knavs was the daughter of Viktor Knavs (born March 24, 1944) and grew up near the town of Rade*e, where her father owned and operated a motorcycle and car dealership. The mother of Amalija (née Ul*nik) (born July 9, 1945) was a pattern maker at Jutranjka in Sevnica, a manufacturer of children’s clothing. When Melanija was a child, she and other workers’ children took part in fashion shows for children. There is also an older half-brother from her father’s previous relationship, whom she has never met, and an older sister who is an artist who is her “longtime confidant”.
Her father was a member of the League of Communists of Slovenia, which espoused atheism as a policy. Knavs grew up in a modest apartment in a housing block in Sevnica, in the Lower Sava Valley. Nevertheless, he secretly baptized his daughters as Catholics as was common. Melania brought her rosary to the Vatican in 2017 and asked Pope Francis to bless it.
She lived in a high-rise apartment in Ljubljana as a teenager after moving with her family to a two-story house in Sevnica when she was a teenager. While studying at the University of Ljubljana, she also attended the Secondary School of Design and Photography in the city. She dropped out after a year of studying architecture and design there.

Knavs began modeling at the age of five, and at the age of sixteen, she posed for the Slovenian photographer Stane Jerko for commercial work. Model Knauss adapted her Slovenian last name “Knavs” to the German version “Knauss” when she began working as a model. At eighteen, she signed with an agency in Milan, Italy. She came in second place in the Jana Magazine’s “Look of the Year” contest in 1992, held in Ljubljana, which offered international modeling contracts to its top three contestants. She also modeled for fashion houses in Paris and Milan, where in 1995, while on a scouting trip in Europe with Donald Trump’s friend Paolo Zampolli, she met her future husband. Zampolli told her he would like to represent her in the U.S. In 1996, she moved to Manhattan. He set her up with an apartment in Zeckendorf Towers in Union Square, where she lived with photographer Matthew Atanian.
The now-defunct French men’s magazine Max published a photo shoot featuring Knouss and another female model that was sexually explicit. In addition to appearing on the cover of GQ magazine, she posed in a naked state aboard Trump’s custom-fitted Boeing 727, reclining on fur in the January 2000 UK edition. During a 2016 interview, Donald Trump commented on the photos: “Melania was one of the most successful models, and she did several photo shoots including covers. The Max photo was a picture taken for a European magazine before I knew her. Europeans are used to seeing pictures like this all the time.”
She also marketed her Melania Marks Skin Care Collection at high-end department stores. Melania launched her own jewelry line, Melania Timepieces and Jewelry, in 2010. In 2016, her jewelry and skincare products under license brought in between US$15,000 and US$50,000 in royalties. Two manufacturers ended their license agreement with her in 2017. An official White House biography listed her companies and products on inauguration day, but they were quickly deleted. A White House spokesperson said her companies are no longer active and “the First Lady has no intention of using her position for profit.”

The first lady visited the Upbring New Hope Children’s Shelter in McAllen, Texas, on June 17, 2018, where 55 immigrant children were being cared for; she met with social workers and medical staff, and declared her desire to assist in the children’s reunion with their families.

The couple met at a party in 1998, and Melania married Donald Trump on January 22, 2005, wearing a $200,000 Christian Dior gown. On March 20, 2006, Barron was baptized at Bethesdaby-the-Sea Episcopal Church, the site of the couple’s nuptials. She became an American citizen in 2006, after becoming a permanent resident in 2001. In 2018, Melania was treated at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center after she underwent an embolization for a benign kidney condition.
The Daily Mail, a British tabloid, published an article regarding Trump’s time as a model that claimed she was an escort. Trump filed a $150 million lawsuit against them in February 2017. Although Melania claimed she lost out on lucrative business relationships as a result of the article, she changed the focus of the suit to her emotional distress instead. “Daily Mail” retracted the article in April 2017 and settled the lawsuit for $2.9 million.
Real Estate
In January 2016, she purchased a 1-bedroom apartment on the 33rd floor of the Trump Tower for $1.5 million. Melania Trump already owned a penthouse that took up floors 66, 67, and 68 of the building, and there has been speculation that she bought the 1,052 square foot apartment for use as a library.
