Jennette McCurdy explains why she was “jealous” of Ariana Grande when she was a Nickelodeon star.
According to McCurdy’s new memoir, “I’m Glad My Mom Died,” she was candid about her “Sam & Cat” co-star. McCurdy referred to Grande as a “burgeoning pop star” who missed filming frequently.
During Grande’s absence, McCurdy said, she had to “angrily hold down the fort” as she sang at award shows, recorded new songs, and did press for her upcoming album.
“Sam & Cat” aired for only one season during 2013-2014, and Nickelodeon offered McCurdy $300,000 for keeping her experiences private. The offer was rejected by her.
Despite sympathizing with Grande, McCurdy was still upset that she did not receive the same opportunities as she did on “iCarly.”
She said she booked two features during ‘iCarly’ but had to turn them down since the show’s crew wouldn’t let her leave episodes to shoot them.
In the beginning, Grande’s absences were sporadic, but eventually, the actress and singer missed a whole week on set.
Apparently they are going to write around Ariana’s absence this episode by locking her character in a box. “Are you kidding me?” McCurdy wondered. So I can’t watch movies while Ariana is whistle-toning at the Billboard Music Awards? F**k. This.”
McCurdy, who was praised for her good sportsmanship in the past, became resentful of the situation.
There are times when I fantasize about my life being different. But it isn’t. It is this. Ariana misses work to pursue her music career while I act with a box. I’m pissed about that. pissed at her, too. jealous of her.”
According to McCurdy, her jealousy stems from the fact that she believes Grande had an easier upbringing than she did.
In her memoir, she writes, “I grew up in Garbage Grove in a goddamned hoarder house with a cancerous mother who constantly wept about not being able to pay our rent and utilities.” Her mother was a wealthy, idealistic Californian, who bought her Gucci bags, fancy vacations, and Chanel clothing whenever she wanted them.
It was originally intended for McCurdy to have her own Nickelodeon show, but she resented having to star with Grande.
