Early Life

Bruce Willis was born on March 19, 1955, in Idar-Oberstein, which was part of West Germany at the time. He lived in Penns Grove, New Jersey, as a child. His mother was a bank teller and his father was an American serviceman. Following graduation from high school, Bruce went to work for a nuclear power plant as a security guard. He then worked as a driver transporting workers at the DuPont factory. Prior to turning his attention to acting, he was a private investigator. 

After studying drama at Montclair State University, Bruce decided to pursue acting full-time in New York City in his junior year. While in New York, he mostly tended bars, while going on auditions unsuccessfully, although he did appear as an extra in Paul Newman’s 1982 film The Verdict. Once in California, he began winning bit parts on TV shows such as Miami Vice and The Twilight Zone. 

He worked as a security guard at the Salem Nuclear Power Plant in 1973 and as a transporter at the DuPont Chambers Works in Deepwater, New Jersey, after graduating high school. He became an actor after working as a private investigator (he was later cast in the comedy-drama series Moonlighting and the action-comedy film The Last Boy Scout). During his studies in the Drama Program at Montclair State University, he was cast in the production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. As a bartender at the Manhattan art bar Kamikaze in Hell’s Kitchen in the early 1980s, he supported himself while living in New York City after leaving school in 1977.

As David Addison Jr. on Moonlighting opposite Cybill Shepherd, Bruce drew upon his prior experiences as a private investigator over five years before auditioning for the role. The show starred Willis for four seasons between 1985 and 1989, earning him an Emmy and a Golden Globe for Best Lead Actor in a Drama Series. He was so popular that Seagram got him a sponsorship deal. Golden Wine Cooler hired Willis for a two-year campaign to promote their cooler. Willis was paid $7 million for the job.
